fonts-codicons for Debian
=========================

The font shipped in this package is rebuilt from the SVG icon sources at build
time, not taken from upstream's dist/codicon.ttf.  Upstream builds theirs with
fantasticon, which is not packaged for Debian; debian/build-font.py reproduces
it with python3-fonttools, the approach fonts-font-awesome uses.

The two builds agree on:

  - all 655 code points (U+EA60..U+ECF7)
  - unitsPerEm 300, hhea ascent 300, descent 0
  - the advance width of every glyph (300; six glyphs use 288)

They are not byte-identical: the quadratic conversion is not the same one
svgicons2svgfont performs, so glyph outlines differ by at most 9 font units
(3% of the UPM, about half a pixel at the 16x16 design size), and the name and
OS/2 tables are set by the Debian build rather than copied.  The rebuilt font
is also slightly smaller than upstream's.

The files upstream publishes next to the font - codicon.css, codicon.svg,
codiconsLibrary.ts and metadata.json - are regenerated the same way instead of
being taken from dist/, and install to /usr/share/fonts-codicons/.  The
codicon.ttf symlink alongside them is what codicon.css resolves the relative
URL in its @font-face through; the font itself is installed once, in
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/codicons/.
