unalz for Debian ================ Supported formats ----------------- Unalz supports two different kinds of ALZ formats which were introduced by proprietary Alzip program by Estsoft Corp. The first BZIP2 based ALZ format was the default format of Alzip 4.9. Alzip 5.0 and later versions have used the newer DEFLATE based format. Since 2009, new versions of Alzip supports the new "EGG format". Its specification document and "unegg" program for Linux are available but under a restrictive (non-commercial only and unmodifiable) license. So don't expect EGG support in the foreseeable future. Dynamicaly linked with zlib and libbz2 -------------------------------------- ALZ format doesn't implement its own compression algorithm. Instead it just uses BZIP2 or DEFLATE algorithms. That's why the unalz source contains zlib and bzip2 library source code. But unalz Debian package doesn't use that embedded library source and it's dynamically linked with system-installed library packages, to reduce the binary size and to minimize possible future security problem by zlib and bzip2. -- Changwoo Ryu , Sat, 2 Feb 2013 13:26:05 +0900
