tk2 for Debian
--------------

On Bob's website at http://parnass.org/ you can find utilities for various
scanners and receivers. If needed I can package them for you. However, please
do not send me a request unless you can actually test the package on a
live receiver.

The README for this package is in /usr/share/tk2, but you can also open it
from the help menu.

To be able to access the serial port on your system it is best if you add
yourself to dialout group. First, check if the serial port is owned by
group dialout:

$ ls -al /dev/ttyS0
crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 4, 64 2006-04-17 11:39 /dev/ttyS0

Next, as root add yourself to the dialout group using the 'vigr' command,
e.g. after adding user pg4i, the line looks like this:
 
dialout:x:20:pg4i

In case one doesn't have their ICOM R2 manual handy to look this fact
up, note that to communicate with one's R2, while pushing [TS], [V/M]
and [up arrow], push [POWER] for 1 second. "CLONE" appears.
(When all finished, all one probably can do is press [POWER] to turn

Q: My laptop has no serial port, I shall buy an USB-Serial adapter.

A: OK, but before leaving the store, be sure there is several volts DC
on some of the RS232 pins, or else, as mentioned in
/usr/share/doc/linux-doc-*/Documentation/usb/usb-serial.txt.gz "The
hid->com adapter ... is incapable of raising line voltage properly,"
referring to e.g., "cypress 1-1.1.3:1.0: HID->COM RS232 Adapter
converter", that means you probably won't be able to establish
communications with the Serial-TTL interface you have made.
Other adapters e.g., ID 0557:2008 ATEN International Co., Ltd
UC-232A Serial Port [pl2303], worked.
